A 62-year-old physician was well until 3 weeks ago when she developed a urinary tract infection. She was treated with ampicillin for 10 days, taking her last dose 7 days ago. Four days ago, she developed abdominal pain, fever, and bloody diarrhea. On examination, she appears acutely ill; her temperature is 38-3°C (101°F) and her abdomen is diffusely tender.
