Introduction
With a view to establish Pharmacovigilance as a distinct and influential clinical discipline in India, an idea was generated during International Workshop on Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring held in November 1998 at New Delhi to initiate steps in this direction.

To give shape to this idea, a meeting of interested scientists took place at Lucknow at the time of the annual conference of Indian Pharmacological Society. Some decisions were taken at this meeting and as a follow up action application was submitted under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860.
